Spring Signing 2017 047

Congratulations to the following student athletes:  Spencer Ashby, Spencer Brown, Arpit Rana, Omar Williams and Garrett Scharff.

From our boys swimming program: Spencer Ashby

Spencer Ashby is the son of Hunter and Mary Ashby.  Spencer is a five year letter winner for the Vikings.  He has been a swimmer for the Y-Spart-Aquatics for the last three years.  As a member of the swim team, Spencer competed in the following events: 50m & 100m freestyle, had a huge win in the 100m breaststroke this season, the 100m fly and the 200 IM. Spencer’s achievements include being named All County, All-Region twice and as a senior All-State.  This year Spencer was a member of the state champion 200 meter freestyle relay team and was also selected as Spartanburg High School’s Wendy Heisman Award Winner. Today, Spencer is signing to continue his swimming career for Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina.

From our boys soccer program: Garrett Scharff

Garrett is the son of Michael & Debbie Scharff.  Originally born in Alpharetta, Ga. Garrett moved to Spartanburg at age six and began playing for CFC (Carolina Football Club) where he has played for the past eleven years.  Garrett has been a member of the Vikings boys’ soccer program for five years, has lettered for four years and serves as a team captain this year as a senior.  To this date, Garrett has 10 goals and 20 assists on the season. This past year he was selected to the state team in the Olympic Development Program and went to the University of Alabama to compete against other state teams in the southeast.  Today, Garrett is signing to play soccer next year at Oxford College of Emory University in Oxford, Ga.

For the last three years and 11 months, no tennis program in the state of South Carolina and maybe not in the entire United States has dominated boys tennis the way the Spartanburg Vikings boys’ program has. To this date, our boys tennis program has an unprecedented 82 match winning streak that is “no pun intended” unmatched!  These guys have won three consecutive 4A state championships and two consecutive national high school championships by way of the Deco-Turf National Invitational and are in hot pursuit of the first ever 5A state championship in the coming weeks.  This incredible success is obviously a tribute to the excellent players that SHS has been so blessed to have and to their families and coaches who have dedicated so much time and energy to their development. In lieu of recent events, I think it is important to point out that these young men lost a dear friend and coach in the past week that spent a tremendous amount of time with them.  I am sure he would be equally as proud to witness today’s signing as we are.  We have already witnessed in the early signing period, Chambers Easterling make is commitment to play at Clemson University and it is now our privileges to witness three more of the team’s members make their selections known.

First, Spencer Brown.

Spencer is the son of Steve and Sherri Brown and has been a member of the tennis team for four years in which he has lettered in all four years.  His career match record for the regular season and playoffs is 31wins and only 8 losses for the Vikings and has been honored 3 times as All-Region, 2 times All-State and finished in the Top 3 in his last state singles appearance.  Today, Spencer is signing to play his collegiate tennis at my very own alma-mater Appalachian State University.

Secondly from boys tennis, Arpit Rana

Arpit is the son of Shinoo Rana, his mother.  He is a four year letter winner on the Viking tennis team and has obtained to this date an incredible career match record of 55 wins and only 1 loss in the past four years.  He was honored as a junior as an All-Region selection. Today, Arpit will sign his letter of intent to attend and play tennis at Centre College in Danville, Ky.

And finally from boys tennis, Omar Williams

Omar is the son of Darryl and Rosie Williams.  He is a six year letter winner on the Vikings tennis team and has obtained to this date a phenomenal career match record of 102 wins versus only 1 loss. Omar is a six time All-Region selection and a two time All-State selection by virtue of his Top 5 finishes in the state individual tournament.  Today, Omar is making his commitment to attend and play tennis at Wofford College.

Before we witness the signings, I would like to point out one more stat for these young men that I believe is most important and why they are able to sit before us today.

4.57, 4.27, 4.47, 4.30 and 4.34

These numbers are the GPA’s for these young men and tell us as much about their dedication as any of their sports accolades.

Congratulations to all of you.
